Tomorrow’s Filmmakers

Our prolific filmmakers of tomorrow are paving their own paths on Tiktok today.

Having grown up alongside fast paced technology, Generation Z has become no stranger to the ever evolving online community. Similar to generations of activists before them, they want to see social progress. However, in contrast, they are more inclined to pursue their personal passions, be authentic in their work, and want to be a part of something with a lasting impact. They are less concerned with large businesses favoring profit and are increasingly more interested in pursuing a higher quality of life.

While millennials and older generations have witnessed the birth of modern technology, most of Gen Z have only known life with smartphones and high speed internet. They have an entirely new world of innovation and possibilities at their fingertips. Take Tiktok, for example. People of all ages have been able to scroll, make videos, and find their communities within the app, but none so much as Gen Z. Where past generations have often seen it as a cause of insecurity, Gen Z has begun to change the narrative and make social media a place of authenticity. Rather than seeing everything as something to be compared, this generation understands that social media is a giant highlight reel. We see what influencers choose to put out into the world, and what they feel best about posting. As TikTok users have come to recognize this distinction, the app has become a space for more people than before to share genuine and unique videos.

Forbes article What The Rise Of TikTok Says About Generation Z, puts it into perspective as “Broadly speaking, millennials seem to prefer to consume content while Generation Z prefers to create content. We can draw similar parallels on other social media platforms. Facebook and Instagram both emphasize vertical feeds for millennials to seamlessly consume content, whereas Snapchat emphasizes its camera viewfinder and visual effects for Gen Z’s creative self-expression.” We have a new generation of trailblazers that are more socially aware and instantly connected than ever before. This is a generation of creative, intelligent, and passionate young people, and the future of film holds infinite potential in their hands.
