Lozano started out in the film industry as an actress in a soap opera. After nine years, she got tired of getting casted for the same roles, and she started writing her own films, and in 2006 she wrote her first script. Lozano has always had a fascination with putting mature women in situations people normally think only young women could be in, things you don’t normally see them in. She wrote The Book Club in 2018 to confront those misconceptions.

Lozano was inspired to become a comedy filmmaker because she was not seeing a lot of what she thought was funny, and she wanted to try her hand at it. Music plays a big role in keeping her motivated for her films, it’s how she starts writing again. She was the manager of the Viper Room for nine years, so music has always been an important part of her creative process.

She credits Valley Girl and 16 Candles as two movies that made her realize she wanted to be a filmmaker. She has always appreciated the “you don’t always get what you want but you get what you need” lesson. After years of working as an actor and now directing her own films, she has learned that trust goes both ways when you’re working as a team.

Lozano recommends to young filmmakers to start out with making a short, and to “learn a little bit about everything in the filmmaking process; editing, costume design, casting. It is so much easier to shoot on your phone now, there are so many apps and sites to assist you.”
